Protesters gather at Buangor
POLICE are on the scene at the Western Highway duplication site at Buangor.
Several indigenous protesters from the Djabwurrung community have gathered, aiming to protect birthing trees which they claim have significant cultural heritage.
Police have set up a blockade to the campsite along the side of the highway.
Officers have told protesters they can protest peacefully but anyone who hinders the job of crews to bring machinery onto the site will be removed.
Police will have dog squads and mounted units at the site this week.
Work on the highway duplication was scheduled to start on Tuesday, after a number of delays to the project.
More to come.
