Bureau warns cold front and damaging winds to come tonight

Senior Forecaster from the Bureau of meteorology Richard Carlyon has warned there could be winds averaging 90 to 110 kilometeres per hour tonight across some parts of the state.

The south of the state and alpine areas are set to be hit with a Severe weather warning current for Stawell, Ararat, Hamilton, Warrnambool, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne and parts of the South West and Wimmera.

Strongest wind gusts recorded between midnight and 10.30am include:

122 km/h at Wilsons Promontory at 4.03am

119 km/h at Mt Hotham at 1.53am

102 km/h at Cape Nelson at 7.08am

96 km/h at Cape Otway at 5.54am

91 km/h at Port Fairy at 12.32am

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
* Keep clear of fallen power lines;

The cold front will last until tomorrow with winds dying down - however the overnight low will be 3 in Horsham, Stawell and Ararat and tomorrows top around 14.
