Anne Webster wins Mallee seat after close call

Preference vote counting for the federal division of Mallee has all but confirmed Anne Webster will maintain the seat for the Nationals.

The elimination process involving 13 candidates left Dr Webster and Labor’s Carole Hart in the running with preferences from third place getter – the Liberals Serge Petrovich – likely to shore up a Nationals win.

The result comes a month after the federal election. Dr Webster was a clear winner on first preferences but Mr Petrovich also claimed a large percentage of the vote.

Election analyst Antony Green called the result unofficially this morning.

Independent candidate Ray Kingston from Rupanyup said this morning the election was ‘all over bar the shouting’.

“Labor was second over the Liberal by a very tight 386 votes.”

“If this had been reversed, the Libs would have probably won,” he said.

will be won by the National Party's Anne Webster. With the count down to only three candidates, the Liberals are in 3rd place 386 votes behind Labor so Liberal preferences will elect Webster
