Paul Hooper resigns as Cr Glenda McLean elected Ararat mayor
Former Ararat mayor Paul Hooper has resigned from council after the appointment of Glenda McLean as the new mayor.
Mr Hooper walked out of the council meeting with fellow Cr Jo Armstrong when Cr McLean was voted in, as did many locals in the public gallery.
Cr Armstrong said she will 'to sleep on it' before making a decision to stay on the council or not.
“I’m incredibly saddened for our community,” she said.
“Everything that we’ve gone through with the commission of inquiry and the evidence of really poor governance from mainly a few councillors, culminating in what’s happened tonight, I’m just so sad for the faith the community has put into elected representatives.
“Democracy is a great thing but gracious me. People get who they vote for – look at who we’ve voted for and look who we’ve got.”
Mayor McLean was elected with four votes while former Cr Hooper received two votes and Cr Peter Beales voted for himself.
