June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month
June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, a Bowel Cancer Australia initiative to raise public awareness of Australia's second deadliest cancer.
Recent statistics show bowel cancer claims the lives of 103 Australians every week while every day in Australia more than 40 people receive a bowel cancer diagnosis.
Bowel cancer is perceived as an old person's disease as it's most commonly diagnosed cancer for those over the age of 75 this is also a misleading and dangerous misconception. Rates are on the rise in under the '50s and bowel cancer is now the most common cause of cancer death in those aged 25-29.
98% of cases can be successfully treated if detected early, but 50% aren't. There needs to be a broader and more honest conversation around Australia's second deadliest cancer.
